Why should paper be recycled?
According to statistics, the demand for paper of all kinds in Vietnam has increased by an average of 8-10%/year, in which, the demand for packaging paper in recent years has increased by an average of 15%/year. In recent years, the paper industry has contributed about 1.5% of the country's GDP, with export turnover in 2018 expected to reach 1 billion USD.
Not only has great economic value, the paper recycling industry is also important in protecting natural resources and the environment. The reason is that 1 ton of renewable materials will help save 5m3 of wood and 1,500 liters of gasoline, among many other chemicals. Using 1 ton of renewable materials also helps reduce emissions by 75% of emissions and 35% of wastewater.
Large consumer demand and high economic value, however, the current difficulty that many domestic paper recycling enterprises face is input materials. According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, each year Vietnam must import up to 70% of paper materials for recycling from foreign countriesOh. In 2017, Vietnam imported 1.95 million tons of waste paper. In 2018, this number is expected to continue to increase, to 2.1 million tons.
In fact, paper recycling is a field with a natural conformity with the circular economy model. Therefore, many opinions believe that the paper recycling industry should be considered a positive activity that contributes to environmental protection and saving natural resources.
Perspective from a business
It is of great significance in many aspects, however, how to develop a sustainable paper recycling industry is something that many leading enterprises in the industry are concerned about. Among these must be mentioned the efforts over the years of Miza Joint Stock Company (Dong Anh district, Hanoi).
With a capacity of about 150 tons of packaging paper per day, over the years, Miza Joint Stock Company has always been in the top 20 enterprises with the largest production scale in Vietnam. According to statistics, each month this enterprise uses about 5,000 - 5,500 tons of waste paper.
In order to ensure legal regulations, the Company chooses to import scrap paper from reputable international suppliers, with quality of goods meeting QCVN 33:2010/BTNMT standards of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. Ltd (Korea), Forestry Asia Resources (Philippines), Peute Papier Recycling (Netherlands)... The imported paper is mainly old cardboard (OCC).
In addition to ensuring the origin of imported waste paper, Miza Joint Stock Company also pays great attention to the treatment of wastewater from the recycling process. The latest monitoring results of the Hanoi Department of Natural Resources and Environment show that the wastewater of this enterprise after treatment has reached the permissible limit QCVN 12:2015/BTNMT of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. Recently, the unit has also been granted ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management System certification. This is considered a strong commitment of enterprises in efforts to develop the paper recycling industry sustainably.
With many benefits, from the economy to the protection of natural resources and the environment, General Director of Miza Joint Stock Company Nguyen Tuan Minh said that State management agencies should continue to study, encourage enterprises to participate in the field of paper recycling, on the basis of close supervision of import and production activities. In particular, applying post-inspection at the factory to paper production is a solution that needs to be taken into account. This is also a way that has been bringing many positive effects in countries that are ahead of Vietnam in this field such as Thailand, Indonesia, India, etc .
