In a press conference on Labor Day on September 7 at the White House, President Donald Trump once again announced the possibility of separating the US economy from China and said that the country would not suffer if the two sides dried up is still in business, according to the Nikkei Asian Review.

Specifically, President Trump said: "Separation is an interesting idea. We are still losing billions of dollars and if we don't do business anymore, we won't have to lose money."

The statement comes as the race for the White House is in full swing. Trump accused his Democratic opponent, Joe Biden, of being too soft on Beijing. "If Mr. Biden wins, China will win and control this country," the US president once declared.

At the press conference, Trump also emphasized that in the future the United States will hold Beijing accountable for allowing the SARS-CoV-2 virus to spread around the world and tighten federal contracts with Chinese companies.

"We will make the United States the world's manufacturing superpower and end our dependence on Beijing forever. Whether it's economic decoupling or imposing tariffs like I did, we're going to end our dependence on China, because we can't rely on this country," the U.S. president saidHis administration will actively bring jobs from China back to the country.

Joe Biden, for his part, criticized Trump's phase 1 trade deal with China as "unenforceable, full of vague and weak commitments to Beijing."

This is not the first time Trump has floated the idea of separating the U.S. economy from China. Late last month, the U.S. president also announced in the press that the country does not need to do business with China if it continues to behave inappropriately, and he vowed to do so.

Analysts say the U.S.-China economies are so closely tied together that the U.S. is unlikely to make the move, but it is likely that Washington will continue to use all means to pressure Beijing to be fairer in the race economic.
